Piri Rutherford was born in Hokianga, in the far north of New Zealand, into the crumbling ruins of a Hippie commune, he is the 4th child of 6 to a woodcarver/hermit father and an ex-nun/Steiner teacher mother…
Having been exposed to diverse music throughout his formative years, it wasn’t until, at 15, he (struggled to) pick up a double bass, that the musical seed planted by his musical upbringing was finally germinated.
Delving further, he explored many instruments, from the guitar to keyboards, samplers, turntables and other electronic instruments, which, while never quite reaching virtuoso standards(!), certainly broadened his overall knowledge and love of music.
The tracks featured on the Mellowgrounds, Computer Meltdown and Turning Point, were produced in Napier, NZ, at which time Piri was just beginning his exploration of electronic music, with the help of uber producer Bruce Jamieson aka Beatlab:digital.
Since moving across the river to the greener pastures of Sydney, Australia, Piri has continued this journey, undertaking various projects with the creative folk inhabiting the inner city area…
Not only developing his production skills, Piri has broadened his scope to include Djing, design, promoting small underground musical festivals, and generally as many facets to creativity as is humanly possible! Stay tuned as the results of these explorations begin to bear fruit…
